High Ranking on Google

1 - Some History

Google is a play on the word googol (in french it means mongolian and/or crazy guy), which was coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner, and was popularized in the book, "Mathematics and the Imagination" by Kasner and James Newman. It refers to the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. Google's use of the term reflects the company's mission to organize the immense, seemingly infinite amount of information available on the web.

It first appeared in the end of 1997, amongst a lot of competition such as Excite, Hot Bot and Lycos. As 2000 ended, Google was already handling more than 100 million search queries a day and continued to look for new ways to connect people with the information they needed, whenever and wherever they needed it. They reached out first to a population with a never-ending need for knowledge students, educators, and researchers paying homage to Google's academic roots by offering free search services to schools, universities, and other educational institutions worldwide.

Now imagine what google has become. Google is the world encyclopedia without even the need of a summary.

2 - DMOZ so called Open Directory Project (ODP)

Another Web directory. Before you engage reading what's below, i suggest you take a time to understand what are the web directories and their ability to gives you a high-quality traffic.

This step is the fundamental one, without DMOZ, don't even think that you will have a rank, not a high rank, not a small rank, a rank on google. This directory provide plenty of other search engines such as : AltaVista, A9, AOL, Clusty, Gigablast, Lycos, MSN, Teoma, WiseNut, Yahoo and the other little search engines called spiders.

The particularity of the ODP (and some others) is that, no robots control and decide where your website go in any categories. This is human! People review your site and decide whether or not you will be added into it. So you have to read their privacy policy carefully in order to fit to the ODP terms.

Special Memo

The Open Directory Project contain more than 5,200,000 sites, 70,000 free editors ready to optimize and structure the directory and more than 500,000 categories and subcategories. A place in this directory grant you the right to scratch on the back of google! And i guess they need it.

3 - Fatal Typos

Before using a car learn how to walk, take time to revise your website typos such as the title, the bad spelling, the keywords, meta tags, revise your HTML.

The HTML Code :

You can usually revise your HTML Code with Dreamweaver or FrontPage but you can use the following link as a very good html markup checker: http://validator.w3.org/.

If your HTML Code contains error. It may affect your Ranking. Make sure all your pages are at least less than 10 errors. The best would be less than 5 errors. Read my article about HTML Document Type to know how to make less errors regarding your website content.

The title of your Website:

The title is placed between the header <head></head> in your HTML Code. Do not use long words or characters like \ % * & $ # <>. It will confuse the robots whose reviewing your website and actually confuse the person whose doing the search. The title shouldn't be longer than 3 to 6 characters but in special case you can use long titles like this example.

If unfortunately your company name is Private Social Insurance AKA (fictive name), and you want to had the title Private Social Insurance AKA For a Best Life - Home. This is not a problem. But if your company or website name is Pool, :) I think you understand my point.
